Blog Four: Medicine + Technology + Art

Medicine + Technology + Art If you did not know, I am a student athlete here at UCLA. Specifically, I play football, which is considered the most dangerous collegiate sport (Thomas, J). There are injuries nearly every day, either at practice or a game due to the extreme physicality. The game of football has been pretty good to me, supplying me with a scholarship for school, but the physicality the game requires has done a decent amount of damage to my body. I have torn my medial meniscus, broken my right clavicle, as well as small tear in my right patellar tendon. Fortunately, due to the advances of the medicine and technology I find a way to get back to 100%, many before me were not as fortunate. But currently there is no more talked about or common injury than the concussion, concussions make up nearly 7.4% of all college football injuries (Football Injuries Data). There is even a movie featuring Will Smith called "Concussion" that was made to highlight the dangers of

Event One Blog: Linda Weintraub Workshop

Image
Last Wednesday April 19th, I attended Linda Weintraub's workshop with a few of my teammates. This was a very original experience, something I have never experienced before. She did not lecture to us, she seemingly broke down the reality of how much man made materials and components we surround ourself with on a daily basis. She gave us an example/story of a man who made a machine that would eat and brake down food into compost. She then asked the question, "Would you rather consume the machines 'poop' or a humans?" and honestly I said a machines. I honestly don't know why though, I did not know why that I assumed that a machines digestive process would be better than a humans. That example only made me furthermore realize that I had a lack of appreciation for the natural world and the human body itself. After that story/example she asked us another question, "What percentage of your day do you spend your time with nothing that is man made?", and ho

Blog Three: Robotics + Art

Image
Arts + Robotics The world we live in is constantly evolving. The technological world we live in is continuously experiencing new technological advances. The first technological advancements began simply with the light bulb created by Thomas Edison or the printing press, where now there are talks about militarized robots and robots that should interact with people on a civil level. I believe mass media is what led to the nonstop growth of new technology. Humans are on a constant search for a simpler lifestyle, the less hard work and manual labor we can do, the better. The main concept I want to discuss is the component of robotics and art. When I think of Robotics one movie sticks out to me more than the rest, "I, Robot". The movie "I, Robot" featuring Will Smith was very entertaining and action packed, but that is not the reason that it stuck out to me after going through this weeks lectures and readings. The reason it sticks out to me is because it utiliz

Blog Two: Math + Art

Image
Math + Art If you are an artist, you can't be a fan of math. If your a mathematician, you can't be a fan of art. But why is that? Can both correlate and work together? After going over this weeks material I have came to the conclusion that the two go hand in hand. It started in the 1300s where Duccio Di Buoninsegna was the first to incorporate depth and the changing of inclines of lines both above and bellow eye level which in turn changed prospective of arts forever. Filippo Brunelleschi came in next with his incorporation of a single vanishing point as well as the utilization of parallel lines to convert the vanishing point (mathematical concepts). The early influences of a vanishing point and other similar objectives brought on more and more advances of art using math, such as 3 dimensional figures on a 2 dimensional canvas. Mathematics in art have taken off since then, in the lecture video she talks about 3D. Three dimensional films are a phenomenon in todays film and

Blog One: Two Cultures

Two Cultures Hello guys, my name is Caleb Wilson. This weeks material was very interesting, but one video stood out much more than the rest to me. It's ideologies and information made me truly believe in what I had previously thought after being through out grade school and even UCLA, but the video supported the idea with facts that I did not believe I was capable of acquiring myself. And what is funny is the reason I didn't think I was capable of supporting my ideas, is part of the concepts actually discussed in the video itself. The video "RSA ANIMATE: Changing Education Paradigms" discussed our educational system and how it is hindering educational capabilities and creativity of our young generations. The current system used in schools is stationary, not evolving to the new era's changes. The school system is hindering our students capabilities do to the fact that it has influenced students to believe that their education and grades will dictate their succes
